Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic complex produced by Actinoplanes teichomyceticus, structurally related to vancomycin, comprised of 5 major components differentiated by a specific fatty acid moiety. It inhibits peptidoglycan synthesis in the cell wall of gram-positive bacteria.
Physico-Chemical Properties:
White or off-white amorphous powder, mp 258--261 DC(dec.); UV max in 0.1 N HCl: 278 (E1% 1 cm: 53); in 0.1 N NaOH: 297 (E1% 1 cm, 74); Soluble in aqueous solution at pH 7.0; partially soluble in methanol, ethanol; Insoluble in dilute mineral acids, in non-polar organic solvents.
